Regardless, a lot of people buy them and sleep on them. You can get the futon frame cheap and sometimes free at Craigslist. Can a futon mattress be steam cleaned?

My carpet steam cleaner has a hand tool attachment for cleaning upholstery. I cannot find a tag on the futon mattress though to see if it says "S" or "W" though.

Yes you can steam clean this, but you really need to make sure that you don't get it soaked. IF you get it to wet then it will dry on the outside and not on the inside and you could have the possibility of it molding on the inside.
Make sure you use just enough water to penetrate the material, then I might suggest hanging it out side to dry.

they can be, if you get a good mattress, there are even futon mattress's that have springs in them. you can go to a futon or furniture store that has futons and ask to try out the different types of futon mattress's that they have. the more comfy ones are a lot more expensive tho, i must warn you.
but i really like futons!

If you get a nice one. I had a cheap one a while back and it was comfortable but not as cushioned as a bed. My brother just bought a nice one and it is so comfortable. It has so many adjustments so you can like lay in bed with part of it raised so you can watch tv. I love sleeping on it when he spends the night somewhere else.

So I would say as long as you do some shopping around and find a nice one it is very comfortable for sleeping on every night.
