So what exactly is the difference between a sofa and a couch, and what is a futon? These are questions that few people may ponder, but if you are so inclined to inquire, we are happy to explain.

A sofa is a piece of furniture and is also called a couch. A futon is a mattress that makes up a Japanese bed. We could stop there, but if you came this far, you probably want a little more detail.

A sofa (or couch) is an upholstered item of furniture designed for the comfortable seating of two or more people. There are usually two armrests, one on each side. This is where comfortable comes in. Sofas are generally found in the living room, family room, lounge, and even sometimes in a den. They are covered in textiles or leather. The most common types of sofas is the loveseat and the settee (two or more seats).

Back to futons. Japanese futons are flat with a fabric exterior stuffed with a synthetic batting. They are usually sold in sets.Futons are designed to be placed on tatami flooring. Traditionally, futons are folded up and stored in the closet during the day. It is believed this is to allow the tatami to breathe and allows for flexibility to use the room for other activities. Many Japanese folks beat their futons regularly using a special bamboo tool. It resembles a carpet beater.
