I like earth tones for the living room - very welcoming - so I'd suggest a wall color like Sherwin Williams "compatible cream" with "alabaster" for any trim and/or ceiling.

Wood flooring, whether it's laminate or actual hard wood, looks much more rich & appropriate for the living room than tile. Then, you'll absolutely want to get a nice area rug. Rugs add color, texture & interest to the room:

If you do decice to paint the room cream, then you can choose any color, pattern, design of rug that you want, and then build the rest of your room from there.
There are so many options when it comes to living room furniture that I can point out some different options & their benefits, but ultimately, you just have to go with something that appeals to your sense of style.
Leather furniture - very durable, yet elegant. If this furniture is going to be getting a lot of use and/or if you have kids, then leather is a great option. The only drawback to leather it that it might not be the coziest if you like to occassionally curl up on your sofa for a nap:

contemporary mircrofiber - fabric repels pet hair & feels great to the touch.

traditional microfiber:

Synthetic - comes in great colors, cleans easily, withstands a lot of abuse:

Here is a whole heap of links to HGTV living room makeovers that might give you some inspiration:

I like "A Family Room For Everyone" and "Contemporary Mediterranean."
